The Great Race
Each August Trinidad holds its premier power boat race, simply billed as "The Great Race".
The open water course runs 93 miles between Port of Spain, Trinidad to Store Bay, Tobago.
As a build up to the race, the boats were displayed in the National Stadium with their crews along-side to answer any questions.
The boats were divided into several different classes ranging from super modified - 125 mph inboard driven to pirogues and even family day cruisers with maximum speeds of 40 mph.
The largest amount of horsepower that we saw in outboards on one boat was 3 - 225 hp. There was barely enough transom width to support the pack - (inboard maximum: 1700 horsepower).
We were intrigued to learn that a "crew" is required to operate the speed boats. The minimum team needed to co-ordinate together is 2 persons - a driver along with a throttle man. In some cases a navigator is also added - now that's co-ordinated team-work!
The show was definitely about speed on the water but also on the land as much to our surprise local dragsters (rails) were also on display.
The Trinidadian's love of horsepower and speed is obvious from the local level on up.
