Chacachacare Island - "the leper colony"

Until l970 Chacachacare Island was home to a leper colony. Housed here as well were patients suffering with tuberculosis, unexplained tropical fevers and anything else considered contagious.
In Chacachacare's heydey, if you can call it that, the island was a bustling community, with churches, library, red-bricked Victorian houses, paved roads and a traffic light. The medical complex included a 260 bed hospital, out-patient clinic, dispensary, consulting rooms, laboratory and nun's residence.
We had a fascinating poke around exploring through the ruins that remain amid the tropical growth that is reclaiming the area.
Currently, the only person left living on the island is the lighthouse keeper.
As we sat on anchor with our friends, surrounded by the ruins, more than one of us felt that the ghosts of those who had suffered here still lingered behind.
